Saul's men have deserted him. The voice has deserted him. He's in the middle of a metamorphosis, only that's not anything you can see when you're in the middle of it.

The banner I most often see associated with that is a butterfly, you know, having just burst from its chrysalis. And as magnificent a transformation as that is, if any of you've really messed around with moths or butterflies, you know different.
I'm told that if you slit open the cocoon of a luna moth in the middle of its life cycle, you will not find inside a fat caterpillar sprouting little green wings. You will simply find a bag of moth mush. Because the process of conversion requires that the caterpillar utterly disintegrate before the butterfly begins to form.
But at some point, a moth does begin to form, and that is step three. A dramatic shift from chaos to meaning. In Paul's case, it was not suddenly because he understood something that he'd never understood before.
